Figuring out how many tiles you need may seem tricky - but it's easy if you know where to begin.

What you will need:

  • A measuring tape
  • Pencil and Paper
  • A calculator to make things easy

On a piece of paper, draw each section that you want to tile. This doesn’t have to be to scale.

If your room isn’t an exact square or rectangle, divide the space you want to tile up into square or rectangular sections. You can do the same thing for tiling around objects, like windows. Just remember to keep your tile measurements in the same direction for each section.

For odd shaped rooms, split it up into square or rectangle sections.

The next step is to measure the width of each section in millimetres. Now, divide that amount by the width of the tile you have selected. This is how you calculate how wide each section in.

Now measure in the other direction to get the length. If you are measuring for wall tiles, you want to measure how high you want to tile up the wall. Remember, you can go all the way to ceiling for a neat finish.

Now divide this measurement by the height of the tiles you have selected. This will give you the number of tiles you will need to cover the height.

To get the total number of tiles needed for each section, multiply the number of tiles wide, by the number of tiles high.

Repeat these steps for each section. And then add up each section total for the total amount.

Finally, add an extra 10% on to make sure you have enough tiles to cover any breakages, or cuts you may have to make.
